NO MORE PAIN - Girl’s game solid after encouraging words |

 QUINCY - One year ago at Granite Links Golf Club, Cindy Rarick and Julimar Avila were in tears. Yesterday, however, they were all smiles.
It was one year ago that Avila, 10, accidentally hit Rarick in the nose with her club during the Olay junior clinic, the event which kicks off the Legends Tour’s BJ’s Charity Championship tournament, which will be played Saturday and Sunday at Granite Links.
Rarick suffered a broken nose, but Avila thought the damage was worse than that.
I felt really sorry that I accidentally hit her in the nose,’’ said Avila, who is from Hyde Park. I thought that it might mess up her career playing golf.’’
While Rarick was rushed off the driving range to receive medical attention, Avila received assurances from other Legends Tour players that it was not her fault. The assurances, however, didn’t console Avila, and she vowed not to pick up a club again.
I didn’t want to hurt anybody else,’’ Avila said.

 QUINCY - The BJ's Charity Championship doesn't start until tomorrow, but Cindy Rarick is already a winner.
So is 10-year-old Julimar Avila from Hyde Park.
During a junior clinic at Granite Links Golf Club prior to last year's BJ's event on the Legends Tour, Avila accidentally hit Rarick in the face with a club while swinging.
The impact broke Rarick's nose and required a trip to Mass. General Hospital, where a doctor stitched her up and snapped the nose back into place. Rarick played with partner Jan Stephenson in the team event on the official senior tour of the LPGA despite the injury.
Avila, a relative newcomer to golf, was so upset about the accident she vowed never to touch a club again. That's when Rarick interceded and kept a bright, talented youngster from steering away from the game. Avila, part of a group from the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Greater Boston, once again participated in the junior clinic yesterday.
